Background: The study used a qualitative method with a hermeneutic approach to identify obstacles and facilitators experienced by patients while participating in sports. Methods: The statistical population was the sports participation experiences of 13 active and inactive patients with special diseases in Tehran province. Sampling was done by snowball and purposive methods. For this purpose, semi-structured open interviews were used to collect data, and also the data were analyzed using thematic analysis processes, and the MaxQDA2018 software was used for analyzing the data. Results: The results of the data analysis led to the identification of 34 initial codes, 17 main themes, and 2 selective codes (individual factors and environmental factors). The individual and environmental facilitators factors for having more sports participation include the feeling of satisfaction, health, and physical fitness, achieving goals, mental and psychological tranquility, social belonging, and medical and financial counseling. Self-inefficacy, lack of motivation, negative attitude, disability, lack of social belonging, infrastructure, busy life, finances, lack of awareness, and virus were individual and environmental barriers. Conclusion: The conclusion showed that sports barriers are mostly environmental, while facilitators are individual factors. Health and physical fitness, satisfaction, and mental and psychological tranquility were among the most important components of the tendency to participate in sports. Thus, barriers overcome facilitators and turn individuals who previously engaged in sports inactive.
