Abuse of Students at School and Its Health Consequences

Background: Mistreatment of students in schools has unfortunately become commonplace; it is not given much attention. While this phenomenon can endanger the physical and mental health of students, the purpose of this study was to "investigate the abuse of students in schools and its health consequences and provide solutions to improve student health.
Methods: This qualitative and phenomenological study assessed the statistical population of all undergraduate students of Shahid Bahonar University in Kerman with 10440 students in the year 2020-2021;  18 students were selected by voluntary-purpose sampling. The research tool was an in-depth semi-structured interviews. The Colaizzi method was used to analyze the interviews.
Results: According to the research findings, the main abuses of students in schools comprised five main themes, eight sub-themes and 50 basic codes. The health consequences of these abuses also caused reduction of  mental and social health of students with three sub-themes namely emotional-mood disorders, psychosocial disorders and academic psychological consequences and 31 basic codes. Emotional-mood disorders including feelings of anxiety, and sadness. Psychosocial disorders included aggression and social isolation , psychological consequences included school truancy, and reduced motivation for progress.
Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that abuse of students in schools has negative and long-term effects on their mental health. Therefore, in order to promote their health, there is a need to seriously deal with this phenomenon by both the authorities ,the community and parents.
