Assessing Use- Pattern of Sports Nutritional Supplements in Tehran’s Body Builders

Background: Sports nutritional supplements are usually found in the diet and do not have doping properties. Nowadays, the consumption of various sports supplements among athletes has been more attention than ever. The purpose of this research is to study use-pattern of sports nutritional supplements in bodybuilder of Tehran.
Methods: The statistical population of this study included all bodybuilders from fitness clubs in Tehran in 2022, and the data collection tool was a researcher-made questionnaire. Based on a cluster sampling method, the questionnaire was distributed among 360 individuals as the sample size. The questionnaire was completed by bodybuilders with a response rate of 90.4%. Finally, after entering the data into the software, the results were presented using descriptive and analytical statistical tests.
Results: The most common consumption pattern among bodybuilders is daily consumption once and the frequent use of protein supplements. There is a significant difference between geographic location and the average frequency of consumption of protein dietary supplements, energy boosters, amino acids, weight loss supplements, and pre-hormones. Additionally, there is a significant difference between geographic location and the purchase of either domestic or foreign brands of protein supplements, carbohydrate supplements, energy boosters, amino acids, weight loss supplements, and pre-hormones. Furthermore, a significant relationship exists between the athletes' total monthly expenses and the purchase of either domestic or foreign brands of protein supplements, carbohydrate supplements, energy boosters, amino acids, and pre-hormones.
Conclusion: The current research, by evaluation of sports nutritional supplements use-pattern in the population of athletes in bodybuilding clubs and also variety of supplements among bodybuilders, emphasizes the need to pay more attention to professional counseling in the field of sports nutritional supplements consumption, modifying of policymaking in access to these products, and implementation of serious regulation.
