Effectiveness of Mindfulness Training on Pain Self-Efficacy in Methadone Patients

Background: Substance abuse disorders are one of the most common psychiatric problems that result from the interaction of genetic and environmental factors, such as developmental abnormalities and unfavorable psycho-social status, which sufferers and people quitting always suffer from chronic pain. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of education on stress reduction based on mind-awareness on Pain self-efficacy in addicts undergoing methadone maintenance treatment.
Methods: This is a quasi-experimental study with pre-test and post-test design with control group. The statistical population includes all drug addicts in the process of withdrawal and undergoing methadone maintenance treatment who visited the addiction treatment centers of Zahedan city. In this study, 45 subjects have been selected by convenience sampling method and randomly were assigned to two groups of 15 (Mindfulness based stress reduction, control) group. The experimental groups consisted of eight 60-minute sessions with Kabat-Zein Mental Awareness Stress Reduction (2013), 2 weekly training sessions and a control group in the waiting list for training. Pain self-efficacy Questionnaire (PSEQ) were used for data collection. Data analysis was analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation and one-variable covariance.
Results: Findings: The results showed a significant improvement in Pain self-efficacy by mindfulness training in the experimental group (p<0.01).
Conclusion: It seems that reduction of mental-based stress is effective in improving Pain self-efficacy in addicts undergoing methadone maintenance treatment.. It is suggested that, along with medical therapies, education for the reduction of mindfulness-related stress should also be conducted.
