In the last decade, traffic accidents have caused more than 170,000 deaths and about 5 million injuries, accounting for about 7% of gross domestic product (GDP). In addition to medical expenses and wasted useful life years of the Iranian population, the important issue is death and disability of active members of the community. Islamic Republic of Iran has failed effective and comprehensive management of this issue due to a number of reasons. The most important include: inefficiency of road policing (Road Safety Commission), weak inter-sectoral coordination, weakness of evidence-based planning and performance, and insufficient attention to socio-cultural aspects in prevention of traffic accidents. The Academy of Medical Sciences has prepared this policy brief with the help of experts, and requests this proposal be included in the agenda of the Board of ministers. |
