Effectiveness of Commitment and Logotherapy on Psychological Distress and Life Expectancy of Breast Cancer Patients

Background: Diagnosing breast cancer causes many disconcerting psychological problems for the patient.  This studysought to compare the effectiveness of acceptance , commitment  and  logotherapy on psychological distress and life expectancy in women diagnosed with breast cancer.
Methods: Thispretest-posttest study with a control grouphada statistical population that included all patients with breast cancer at Imam Reza Hospital in Kermanshah in (2020). Through purpose sampling, 30 patients were randomly selected and divided into three groups: acceptance and commitment treatment, Logotherapy and controls. Acceptance and commitment intervention and Logotherapy intervention each underwent of 8 sessions that were performed in groups and weekly for experimental groups. To evaluate the research variables, demographic information questionnaires, psychological distress questionnaire and life expectancy questionnaires were used. Data analysis was performed using analysis of variance and post hoc test using SPSS-21 software.
Results: The results showed that there was a significant difference between the effects of acceptance and commitment therapy, logotherapy and a control group in psychological distress components at significant levels ( P<0.031  to0.002) and life expectancy components at significant levels. Also, the results of post hoc tests indicate that treatment via acceptance and commitment to Logotherapy and the control group had the most therapeutic effects on improving the psychological distress and life expectancy of patients with breast cancer. Quarterly follow-up indicated the relative stability of the study results.
Conclusion: Acceptance and commitment therapy reduces the psychological distress and improves life expectancy of breast cancer patients more thanLogotherapy does
