The Academy of Medical Sciences of Iran warns that the country is entering a very low fertility trap and an aging crisis, emphasizing the urgent need to reform population policies. The total fertility rate has fallen to 1.34, and annual births have sharply declined to below 900,000. Marriage, as the main gateway to childbearing, has dropped by more than 50%. The statement proposes three strategic priorities: reducing the livelihood burden during the child's first two years, addressing youth housing and employment, and strengthening reproductive health infrastructure and cultural alignment. The window for recovery is less than a decade. |
