Occupational Exposure to Pesticides In Farmers And Impact on The Reproductive System and Infertility: A Narrative Review

Background: Infertility is one of the important problems of couples. With the modernization of life and societies, environmental and Occupational risk factors can affect reproductive tissues. The aim of this review study was to investigate occupational exposure to pesticides in farmers and its impact on the reproductive system and infertility.
Methods: This review study utilized 40 articles published between 1979 and 2026 from the Scopus, Embase, PubMed, and Web of Science databases.
Results: Pesticides have a harmful effect on the reproductive system of male and female. Occupational exposure of farmers to pesticides has been reported to have effects such as birth defects, ovarian failure, erectile dysfunction, stillbirth, miscarriage, spontaneous abortion, decreased sperm count, sperm morphology abnormal, testicular atrophy, impotence, and premature ejaculation.
Conclusion: Exposure of farmers to pesticides is associated with significant disorders in the reproductive system and preventive and control actions must be taken in this regard. actions such as educating and raising awareness among farmers about the reproductive risks of pesticides, using standard personal protective equipment, conducting pesticide exposure risk assessments, prioritizing chemicals with reproductive effects, conducting infertility examinations for screening and early diagnosis in individuals exposed to pesticides, and reducing the time of exposure to pesticides must be taken. |
