Epidemiology: What Is it and Who Does it

| Although epidemiology has been defined as the “study of the distribution and determinants of disease in man”, the expanding concept of total health by incorporating social and environmental determinants has forced a number of revisions on this definition. Given the principles and knowledge structure of this field of science and the significant mutual impacts of social and behavioral conditions of the present century, a new definition can now be crafted as "the science and art of mess phenomena". In this sense, any event that takes on a public dimension in the society can be explored by epidemiology. Epidemiologists generally do not have implementation power, but are important counsellors, and can always provide the results of their research with relevant suggestions to the planners, and help them with the evaluation of the actions taken. Epidemiologist can also function as a link between the biological and social sciences and increase collaboration between the them for the achievement of mutually important objectives. Epidemiology should no longer be limited to health sciences, and its principles must be taught to all those involved in public events, regardless of their field of study. |
