A View on the Financial Turnover of Hospitals in the Golden Age of Islamic Civilization

Background: In the field of medical services, a main topic for policymakers around the world is financial turnover. This article discusses the financial relationship between the hospital and the patients and explores financial supportive systems in the era of flourishing Islamic civilization.
Methods: This study reviewed the historical texts related to how hospitals financially survived during the era of Islamic civilization.
Results: The establishment of the hospitals was done with the governmental budget provided by the ruler or the minister or the caliph. The costs of treatment, running costs maintaining the hospital costs and salaries have been government-sponsored. In addition to governmental support, income was donated to hospitals from endowments. These endowments included bazars, baths, inns and warehouses, which had an annual income for the hospital, which was recorded in the hospital's revenue and expenditures..
Conclusion: Financial support systems existed in hospitals since the era of Islamic civilization. Endowment has been one of the main sources of long-term financing of hospitals, and paying attention to this Islamic advice may be considered in the financial turnover of hospitals in many Islamic societies in modern times. |
